Homework Policy

Dear Parents,

The second grade team would like to inform you of our homework policy.  Students will be required to complete twenty minutes of reading, and five minutes of math facts practice each night.  Both the reading and the math will be recorded in a reading and math log, which will then be signed by a parent and returned at the end of the week.  On occasion, students may be asked to complete an extra project, report, or interview.

Please note that both the reading log and math log are to be filled out by the student.  If a student read, but did not fill out their reading log, then their homework will be considered incomplete.  These reading and math logs are a way for us to see that the work has been completed and that comprehension has taken place.

We would also like to take this time to further explain how we expect the math practice to take place.  By the end of second grade, students are expected to write twenty addition and subtraction facts within a minute.  To be able to do this, students must continually practice their math facts through mastery.  Students will have a choice of practicing their math facts with supplied math fact sheets, flash cards, orally with a parent or other adult, on the computer, with a math game, or any other creative way you choose!

As previously mentioned, we will supply the math fact sheets.  The way this will work is that students will receive addition fact sheets from 0s and 1s to 10s in their homework binder.  Parents will be asked to monitor the five minutes the students work on a worksheet, checking for correct answers and mastery of the facts.  This may mean that a student only completes one row or less of problems (within the five minutes.)  The following day the student can return to the same fact sheet and work on the next row of problems for homework.

Because our students learn at different rates, each student will master each fact at a different pace.  Once the sheet is complete the student can return the sheet in their homework binder and then begin the next sequential math fact sheet in their binder.  Please note, that mastery tests will be given in class every Friday on each student's current fact level. It will be indicated by your child's teacher on their math log every Monday whether they should move onto the next math fact or continue to practice the math fact level their on for one more week. Please help your child study the math fact level they are working on until they reach mastery.

Of course, students can choose how they want to spend their five minutes of math homework with the options given above.  If you have any further questions, please see your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

The Second Grade Team
